Number six in our walk through this year's Nationwide Mercury Prize nominees is Laura Marling's first full-length album, Alas I Cannot Swim. At first listen the album is sweet and quiet, the folksy darling leading you on a journey through three chords. Then you do some research and find out she's only eighteen and the maturity of her voice and music-writing strikes you. Then you listen more carefully to the lyrics and notice clever turns of phrase, and then this album starts to grow on you. At least, that's what happened for me. She is definitely soulful beyond her years, and discovering her world view. Expect great things from this one. A nomination this year, maybe a prize next year. Check out Ghosts, below...
