You can save the world

Actual conversation between me and a friend, on the occasion of another friend's birthday:

me: How does she feel about microloans?
friend: "Here's five bucks, happy birthday, I'll be needing that back"?

I did settle on the microloan in her name, and my friend loved it. Her loan has helped a business get started, and has since been paid back. She has reinvested the money in another third-world enterprise, helping more people get on their feet. She is saving the world, twenty bucks at a time.

Below, taking it to the next step. Also a cool piece of advertising:

Interesting factoids: For every dollar spent in the developing world, girls receive less than one half of once cent. A woman or girl in the developing world will reinvest an average of 90% of her income into her family. A man will reinvest less than 40%. When girls have received 7 or more years of education they marry 4 years later and have 2.2 fewer children.
