Adele - 19

Ah, messy breakups. Is there any better fodder for tearful music writing? I think not. Adele's debut album, 19, hit the shelves January 28 of this year, and within weeks was certified platinum. It has also been nominated for this year's Nationwide Mercury Music Prize, Britain's equivalent to the Polaris over here. Adele's voice is strong and subtle, like she's channeling Etta James with a filter of Macy Gray. The kid can definitely sing. The material on the other hand, is not as solid as it could be. 19 does cover all the bases, from soulful soul to poppy pop but Adele could use some more time and life experience to flesh out her songwriting abilities. All told, good for her getting the nomination, but don't give her the prize. She doesn't deserve it yet.
